Neyyar Sanctuary
The Neyyar life Sanctuary is a vibrant canvas of exotic flora and thriving fauna in Trivandrum.The sanctuary which was established in 1958 is of 12000hectares in space has affluent vegetation and is one of the foremost exquisite wildlife sanctuaries in Kerala. The sanctuary is within the catchment area of the Neyyar River. The in born beuty of the sanctuary is more increased by the Agasthyamalai and Neyyar Reservoir. The fascinating Agasthyarkoodam peak is another feature of this place with the Neyyar Dam in its background .The woody forests and hills of the Neyyar wild life Sanctuary supply shelter to the extensive set of flora and fauna. The wildlife includes elephants, Sloth Bears, Nilgiri Tarhs, Gaurs, Sambars, Barking Deers, Indian Porcupines, Malabar Squirrels, Tigers, Lion-tailed Macaques, Jungle Cats, Wild Boars and Nilgiri Langurs.The sanctuary is also known for its migratory birds. A joy for bird watchers, The exotic birds that the sanctuary hosts embody Kingfishers, White-breasted Water Hen, little green Heron, Woodpecker, Indian Cuckoo, grey jungle fowl, Brahminy Kite and so on. Additionally some rare reptile species like cobras, vipers, pythons, Rat Snakes and Flying Snakes are also found here. Variety of the flora and fauna makes the sanctuary a perfect gene pool preserve. Crocodile watching, boating and trekking and adventurous lion safari are some of the most common leisure activities.
