The smallest of Kerala districts, Pattanamtitta is located in the southern region
of Kerala. Nearly half of its total space is beneath the forest cowl. It's encircled
by Kottayam, Idukki, Alappuzha and Kollam districts. Pattanamtitta shares its border
with the state of Tamil Nadu within the east. Pathanamthitta, Tiruvalla, Adoor,
Pandalam, Ranni, Kozhencherry, Mallapally, Konni and Koipuram-Kumbanad-Pullad are
the most important cities within the district. Tiruvalla is the major business centre
Pathanamthitta is well known as the headquarters of pilgrimage and for the massive variety of pilgrims it receives. The well known pilgrim centre of Sabarimala, is located here that is visited by millions of devotees every year visiting the Temple of Lord Ayyapa. The district tourist department gave Pathanamathitta district the caption "The Abode of God" owing to its importance among the devotees.
Pathanamthitta has been declared the primary polio-free district in India. The district is the host to Asia's biggest and therefore the world's second largest Christian convention. Pathanamthitta district has places acknowledged for its historical importance. Among them are the ancient castles at Pandalam, monument of Velu Thampi Dalawa at Mannadi and the Muloor Smarakom (Muloor memorial). The snake boat competition within the Aranmula River or the Aranmula vellamkali is another vital attraction.
